    Your responsibilities for the management, storage and processing of safe food
    The specialty of living in Adelaide and the availability of amazing food and products is a great thing. Did you know that there are more than 1,000 food businesses in the city of Adelaide and North Adelaide? 
    As a food business owner, you must  notify the council when you start a business. 


    Food safety standards and compliance


    Food Standards Australia Australia and New Zealand is a government agency that governs the Food Standards Code  that all food handling businesses must comply with. This code contains a lot of information, so please contact us if you need help or guidance regarding food safety.


    Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) of City ide delays are involved in regular inspections of food management businesses to ensure compliance. Providing advice and guidance on food safety to the Food Act 2001 and regulations as well as business owners.


    Here are some of the areas they monitor:


    1. Delivery
    2. Collection
    3. Process (preparation, cooking, serving)
    4. Display (Ben-Maries, Cabinet, etc.)
    5. Packaging
    6. Transport and delivery
    7. Remember / food disposal
    8. Knowledge of health, hygiene and food handlers
    9. General condition and cleanliness of the food space.
    10. Food inspection fee
    11. We will waive your inspection fee if your food businesses are inspected by EHOs and deemed to be relevant.


    Foods that are not consistent will charge a food inspection fee for an initial routine inspection. For each non-compliant follow-up inspection (unless the business is inspected and required to be consistent), a fee will also be charged.


    All inspection fees are based on the City of Adelaide fee and fee schedule .


    Food safety at events


    There are a few things you need to do to keep everyone safe:


    There are hand washing facilities inside your stall / van

    Clean the surface of your utensils and food contact

    Control your food temperature - Digital probe thermometer ready to use

    Protect your food from contamination (e.g. during transport, storage and display)

    If you are using a barbecue or hotplate, make sure you have a protective barrier to prevent public access

    Disposal of odors and dirty water from hand washing facilities, cooking, washing facilities, mud tanks, sewers or back home. Do not dispose of wastewater in park lands, storm water drains, Lake Torrance or any other water courses or public land.

    Food Safety Rating Plans - Good for Business


    You've probably seen golden stars in the window of your favorite food outlet. This is the result of the Food Safety Rating Scheme, designed to educate people about food safety practices in the food business.


    The rating is calculated using the results of our regular food safety inspections. Businesses are given 0, 3, 4 or 5 stars. Currently, businesses may choose to voluntarily display their certificate at the site of inspection.


    We believe there are significant public health benefits to be gained from this scheme. More information on supporting documents and contact details regarding this scheme can be found on the SA Health Food Safety Rating Scheme website. If you can't see the star rating in your favorite restaurant, ask them about it!


    Note on doggie bag


    Many customers request a "doggy bag" to take the leftovers home if they can't finish the meal. The Food Act does not prevent food businesses from providing doggie bags to consumers, so it belongs to every business if they want to do so.


    Consumers should expect leftover food to be placed in new, food-grade containers and marked with a date. Make sure you eat your leftovers or refrigerate as soon as possible. If you’re heating them up later, make sure they’re heating up before you enjoy.


    Food safety programs


    Foodstuffs such as hospitals, age care centers, child care centers and mobile food service delivery organizations require:


    Implement a proper food safety program; Or

    Review existing food safety programs to ensure compliance with food safety standards; And

    Coordinate the audit data of the food safety program through the Food Safety Auditor approved by the Department of Health.
