Memorial Hospital General Surgery and Organ Transplantation Department experts gave information about breast pain types and points to be considered.

Breast Pain Occurs in Two Out of Three Women

Breast pain is a mild or severe complaint seen in two out of three healthy women. One out of ten women with breast pain may complain of severe pain affecting their daily lives. Breast pain should be differentiated from the tension pain seen in the premenstrual period, which lasts an average of 4-5 days and is considered completely normal.

Those with Breast Pain Must See a Doctor

The most common cause of breast pain is structural changes in the breast. There is almost no relation between breast pain and cancer. Breast pain occurs in 1-2% of patients with breast cancer. However, although very rare, pain in the breast may be the only symptom of cancer. For this reason, a woman who has a complaint of pain in the breast should be examined by a general surgery specialist and evaluated after the examinations. It cannot be said that breast pain increases the risk of cancer in those who have been examined by a doctor and have been determined that the underlying cause is not cancer.

Tea, Coffee, Chocolate, and Cola Drinks Can Cause Pain

Smoking, stressful life and a substance called "tyramine" in wine can be the cause of pain. Tea, coffee, chocolate and cola drinks containing a chemical substance called "methylxanthine" that causes pain by stimulating the sensory receptors in the breast can also cause pain. In addition, it is stated that the pain increases in the diet rich in excessive saturated fat and the use of inappropriate bras.

There are Three Types of Breast Pain

Pain Related to Menstrual Period: It is the most common type of pain. 70% of the pains are of this type. They are pains that usually occur in the premenstrual period, reach their highest level just before menstruation and disappear with menstruation. It is more severe than normal premenstrual pain. It is more common in the thirties. Sometimes it exacerbates near menopause. However, most of the time, it disappears spontaneously close to menopause. It is felt more on the upper and outer sides of the breast. Sometimes it spreads to the armpit. Along with pain, sensitivity in the breasts may increase.

Pain not Related to Menstrual Period: It is more common in the forties. It takes less time than the ones associated with menstrual cycle and disappears spontaneously in half of the patients. It is usually one-sided. It may be a part of the breast or there may be pain that spreads to the whole. The main cause of this type of pain is benign breast diseases such as a cyst in the breast, fibroadenoma, duct enlargement, lipoma or fibrocystic changes.

Pain Caused by an Event Unrelated to Breast: Although this type of pain is unrelated to the breast, it is felt in the breast. Here, the pain can originate from the muscles in the chest wall, rib joints, cartilage tissues, and nerve roots in the neck.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Breast Pain

Except for breast pain, which is normal and mild premenstrual pain, women who have pain should definitely be checked by a general surgeon.

In the treatment, treatments with the least side effects are arranged gradually. If there is a factor that causes pain in the first stage, it should be eliminated. Every woman with and without pain should get into the habit of self-examination. Sometimes the pain can be caused by improper laundry. Women with pain should keep in mind that they should wear a bra that is suitable for their breast size and is not too tight. Patients with breast pain should pay attention to their diets, consume less foods such as tea, coffee, chocolate, cola drinks, wine, do not smoke, avoid stress as much as possible and prefer vegetable oils. In the next stage, simple painkillers and edema-solving drugs are preferred for severe pain. If there is no response, herbal medicines can be tried.
